UMD to the B1G

It's official.

From ESPN's Big Ten Blog:

The University of Maryland Board of Regents unanimously approved a move to the Big Ten on Monday, a source tells ESPN colleague Brett McMurphy.
An official announcement is expected at 4 p.m. ET at the school's campus in College Park, Md.
Maryland must officially apply for Big Ten membership, and needs a yes vote by at least nine of the 12 Big Ten presidents/chancellors (80 percent required) for admission. This is basically a formality.

After two decades of relative quiet, the Big Ten is poised to expand for the second time in two and a half years. Rutgers is expected to follow Maryland, giving the league 14 members.

Much, much more to come...

What does this mean?  Not sure yet.  A lot of things to consider.  But as my friend Doug just said: All eyes are on Trailerhassee now --- if FSU gets the wandering eye, the ACC grenade could explode, blowing UVA and UNC to the Big Ten.

Stay tuned...

  1. Again... I certainly won't miss Maryland's fanbase as this picture can attest. hopefully this move won't create too many waves, but I fear that may not be the case.

  2. So where's the $50 million coming from?

    1. **If** it ends up being 50M, then I imaging thew B1G will front some money and the rest will be picked up by Kevin Plank CEO of Under-Armour.

  3. They can affect FSU in that they see the writing on the wall that the ACC will chronically be unstable. In that case they may consider moving to Big12 sespite the 50M exit fee, which I will believe MD will pay when the check clears.

  4. Any chance these number conferences change up their names?

  5. Fans up here are butthurt that Duke and Carolina don't consider them true hoops 'rivals.' I know it's about the money, but they are telling themselves that this move is okay because they don't get the hoops cred they feel they deserve. And they have convinced themselves that the football program will somehow magically transform thanks to the move to the B1G.

I gotta think Randy's gone after next year...

    1. Hilarious. They have won a grand total 9 conference games in the past 4 years in the ACC. B1G is not the best conference, but my guess MD should get used to slumming with Indiana in the basement in football.
