Best of Wahooze

We're not at any particular milestone or anything like that... this is the 444th post on Wahooze, it's two years, seven months, and five days old, and there's not really a great reason for me to do this right now.  That said, I have three reasons, all my own:

1) This is the celebration of the one year anniversary of the moment I came closest to shutting the blog down forever.

2) I typically struggle to generate quality posts this time of year.  Not sure why, but I have difficulties in January and February.

3) Self-links increase a blog's value.

So take this trip down memory lane with me as I celebrate what I consider to be the Best of Wahooze.

A Game-by-Game Look at the Al Groh Era

I think this was the post that hooked many of our core readers.

I don't often "nail it," but with these two posts I freaking NAILED IT.

It's been two years, and I still can't believe the dude did this at his last presser as UVA's head coach.  It still annoys me /slash/ makes me hate him.  Glass house because I'm a big douche bag myself, but reading this poem makes Groh a colostomy bag filled with douche.  Like a Macy's Parade balloon filled with douche.

Yep, bloated by his own ego.
Alex's epic odyssey to NYC for the Pizza Cone got a huge reaction from Wahooze Nation, even inspiring one guy to make his own homemade pizzacone!

CA$H

Not really a Wahoze post, but this piece from Andy Staples is what inspired me to really sink my teeth into realignmageddon.  Two years later, and my appetite remains insatiable.

Just really proud of this one.

Just because it was a massive undertaking, and I think it turned out pretty good.

The most romantic rosterbation I've ever engaged in.

It was awesome sitting there with Luke Bowanko's dad and chatting the whole afternoon.

Just fun to write.  I hadn't seen anything like it anywhere else, so thought it'd be a good read for everyone with the NCAA Tournament wrapping up.  I really am working on the football version and the merged version... coming... eventually?

Maybe my Wahooze magnum opus.

Ahh, gladhanding.

Totally therapeutic.  Reading it back is therapeutic too.

The idea / decision to add Mike and Pierce to the blog was a big one.  I'm really proud of that move today.

Mike and Pierce's intro Q&A were both really fun reads.

The perfect synopsis of the trouble at Miami, brought to us from a guy whose first love was Miami football.

I'm a uniform nerd and a rosterbation dork, but more than anything I am now a realignmageddon geek.

The madness has only just begun...

I think I might be at my best when I'm emoting.

If "AD for a Day" was the magnum opus, this was the MAGNUM OPUS.  (All caps.  Did you notice?)

Mike's parallels between Miami and Virginia made for a pretty great piece.  Loved it.  Proud it was on my blog.

This was kind of a game-changer for me as a sports fan, as a Virginia fan, and as a Hokie-hater.  Without question, it's another post that I'm incredibly pleased to have on Wahooze.  And the follow-up with Doug is coming soon!  Get excited.

Hilarious.  A great, great piece from Pierce.

Best... picture... ever...

Pierce's basketball preview was a slam dunk.  (See what I did there?)

I hit the mark on this one.  Too bad the football team missed the mark so badly a day later.

Again, at my best when emoting.  I guess the blog will start to suck once we start getting really good in both sports.

It's been a great ride, and now I'm hungry for more!

What's next?  If there's any topic you'd like to see us tackle - big or small - let me know.  Post it in the comments, or hit me at kendallhowell@gmail.com

Thanks again for reading!

  1. MORE BASEBALL COVERAGE THIS YEAR.

  2. It's coming, Andrew. It's coming. Mike has a 10-pager he's waiting to unleash.

Meanwhile, I kinda realized that a winning program with not a whole lot to criticize is a fairly boring topic. "We are awesome at baseball" is not an overly compelling piece. I think you catch my drift.

Also, I've only been a baseball guy for about eight years. I lack the 25+ years I have invested in football and hoops.

    1. Even when we're winning, there are still useful things to point out to those who might not be able to follow whichever program as closely as they would like. I know that's how I've used this blog for basketball and football in seasons past, and I think that Wahooze could serve in a similar way for the baseball team. Any additional coverage for those guys is awesome in my book, and what the hell else are you guys gonna write about once basketball is done?

  4. I can't help but think that the overall tone of this blog is likely to change over the next few years. A lot of these are pretty bummer stories. Pizzacone was especially wack.
