This brings us to this beautiful week of college football. One ripe with optimism and a taste for revenge! Duke comes into Charlottesville to meet the new buzz saw that is the Wahoos. This week’s guest picker is one of my best friends and roommate Tripp Eason. It seems like only yesterday Professor John Maybee was pairing me up with a kid in lime green corduroys for a statistics project, who knew he would ride that project all the way to this level of celebrity. Anyway Tripp is a smart kid, knows his stuff for the most part, and tailgates like a champion, ask our dining room furniture. Let’s get into the picks.
Duke @ Virginia (-10)
Picking the Hoos: Pierce, Kendall, Tripp
Picking the Blue Devils: Mike
Mike Says: We are going to win. No question in my mind. But Sean Renfree and that passing attack still scares me a little with our secondary play not inspiring much confidence of late. Plus I need to make up points.
Pierce Says: CORNER.TURNED.
Tripp Says: Can't pick against us.
Kendall Says: Double-digit faves against Duke. Totally refreshing to see. I bet we're in store for a real treat this weekend, a total revenge-laced beatdown of the Blow Devils.
Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech (-1)
Picking the Hokies: Kendall, Tripp, Mike
Picking the Jackets: Pierce
Mike Says: Georgia Tech’s struggles against teams with over a week to prepare for their attack are well documented. So is Al Groh’s records against Virginia Tech. Stupid Hokies.
Pierce Says: Going with the home team, but mainly because Tech's defense is in shambles. Their reorganizing and moving around players to prepare for GT, but I don't think playing a DB and LB is going to cut it.
Tripp Says: Hate doing this, but I think Tech will win.
Kendall Says: Wow, GT is favored? I don't see them winning this contest. Hokies got the wake-up call in Durham, and have had close to two weeks to prepare themselves for the triple option. Also, Al Groh doesn't beat Virginia Tech. He just doesn't. We already know this.
Pitt @ Louisville (-3)
Picking the Cardinals: Everyone!
Mike Says: Louisville’s defense is pretty good. And Teddy Bridgewater is getting better. Think David Watford, but less crappy.
Pierce Says: Still don't care about Pitt or the Big East, total guess.
Tripp Says: Pure guess.
Kendall Says: Nod to Mike on this one -- Teddy Bridgewater is growing on me.<<VALIDATION
South Florida (-4) @ Syracuse
Picking the Bulls: Mike, Tripp
Picking the Cuse: Kendall, Pierce
Mike Says: Ironic that Lou Holtz’s son is probably about to be the head man at the preeminent football school in South Florida? I think so. Oh yeah and they win.
Pierce Says: USF isn't very good, despite being favored. I like the Cuse at home.
Tripp Says: Don't know anything about either team. Kendall likes Syracuse so I'll go USF.
Kendall Says: Picking the 'Cuse all the way to the poor house this season.
Wake @ Clemson (-16.5)
Picking the Deacs: Mike
Picking the Tigers: Pierce, Kendall, Tripp
Mike Says: Wake held up nicely against Notre Dame last week. Clemson wallowed in shame. Uncle Mo is certainly on Wake’s side. They keep it close.
Pierce Says: Week off helps the already more talented Tigers at home.
Tripp Says: Wake sucks. Clemson will roll.
Kendall Says: Can Clemson bounce back from that loss to Georgia Tech? With two weeks to lick wounds, I bet they come out and eviscerate Wake.
NC State (-2.5) @ BC
Picking the Pack:Mike, Pierce, Kendall
Picking the Eagles:Tripp
Mike Says: BC starts a young QB who is unproven and has a lot of youth surrounding him. Sound familiar?
Pierce Says: This easily could go the other way, but State did such a good job on D against UNC, I think they win pretty handily.
Tripp Says: BC will probably lose, but maybe they'll pull off a game like against MD
Kendall Says: State is trying to rally to 7-5 and a bowl berth, while BC has nothing left to play for. They kinda showed me something in shutting out UNC last week.
Miami @ FSU (-10)
Picking the Noles: Kendall, Pierce
Picking the Canes: Mike, Tripp
Mike Says: I don’t like to pick rivalry games by this big a spread. I think FSU wins, but it’s close. Perhaps Miami is wide right.
Pierce Says: 10 seems like the perfect spread, my gut says FSU wins comfortably.
Tripp Says: Depends on which Miami shows up, but I think they'll bring it to FSU.
Kendall Says: Should be a good game. I just think the Noles have a bit more than the Canes can handle right now, especially playing at home.
Locks!
Mike:
West Virginia @ Nasty Natti (-3.5)
Forgive me for not thinking West Virginia has this in them. Cincy can put the big east out of its misery.
Nebraska (-3) @ Penn State
No comment on the situation. Nebraska is just much better.
Pierce:
Oregon @ Stanford (-3.5)
Andrew Luck party yall.
Nebraska (-3) @ Penn State
Turmoil over the abhorrent actions of a former coach and equally disgusting inaction by Paterno leads to a distracted and losing football team. Just kidding, Penn State loses this game because their not nearly as good of a football team. Paterno ends his incredible career at the end of the season among controversy and on a 4 game losing streak starting this week.
Tripp:
Nebraska (-3) @ Penn State
Paterno gone. Pick changed!
Oregon @ Stanford (-3.5)
Andrew Luck vs a weak Oregon defense. I'll take that.
Kendall:
West Virginia @ Cincinnati (-3.5)
Not "Cincinatti" Mike. Cincinnati. Two Ns, one T. Invest in a spell check or something, wiz kid.
Nebraska (-3) @ Penn State
Just a hunch, but I bet the Nits are a bit distracted right now, not really focused on beating Nebraska.
There you have it. Hopefully a Kendall Howell beat down ensues for your smartass comments. Engineering skool no teach me to speak good.
And of course:
What's with the Tar Heel garbage at the bottom? Gross, dude.
