Oklahoma outlasted Army earlier today, 2-1 in 10 innings. Therefore, we play the Sooners in an elimination game tonight. The winner must take both games of a doubleheader against Appalachian State tomorrow night.
With Branden Kline and Artie Lewicki burned, and with Kyle Crockett having pitched in both games already, we'll need Johnny Wholestaff to guide us through three wins in just over 24 hours. Not likely, not with this thin, shallow, shaky pitching staff. Scott Silverstein, Shane Halley, Nick Howard, Joel Effertz, and Barrett O'Neill will likely be called upon to lead the way. The only one in that group I have a lot of faith in right now is Sugar Shane, and he's trying to play through a painful side strain.
We really, really need you to get it going, Jared King. |
The relatively weak pitching (by Virginia standards), along with prolonged slumps from Derek Fisher and Jared King, will ultimately spell our doom this season. To have battled to 39 wins and hosting a regional in this rebuilding season is a true testament to the coaching staff and the grit level of Virginia Baseball. Close to 40 wins in a down year is a great, great thing.
Season's not over yet, but it will take a miracle for us to beat Oklahoma tonight and then Appy twice tomorrow. Those are two very talented teams we're talking about, and they won't go down without a serious fight... and we just don't have the arms available to compete.
We still have life. Let's see what happens. First step is to nut up and beat the Sooners tonight. I at least want to see us get our revenge on those chumps for the super regional loss in 2010.
GO HOOS!
