Virginia 13, Bucknell 12, OT

Chris Bocklet: STUD.

The Hoos overcame a 10-6 deficit in the 3rd quarter to beat Bucknell today in overtime.  Great game.  Chris Bocklet led the way with five goals and Steele Stanwick pitched in five assists.

We were still plagued by shaky defense, poor faceoffs, and a frustrating inability to snag ground balls, but Adam Ghitelman (11 saves) was solid between the pipes and the offense did just enough -- especially in the clutch -- to win the game against a very good Bison team.

Up next is 2-seed Cornell on Saturday at 12:00 noon.  Trust me, the Big Red is not enthused about seeing this Virginia team sitting there waiting for them in the quarterfinals, especially if the Bocklet/Stanwick combo can keep things revved up.

GO HOOS!

  1. I haven't caught a game since the Bratton fiasco(s), and I only came into this one in the 3rd period, but I thought the team looked way better than earlier in the season. yeah they sucked on ground balls and face-offs, but the offense worked together a lot better than before. where was LaPierre today? i love that dude - he is our rodman. cornell will be tough...go hoos!

  2. I think Shamel Bratton being removed from the team looks like a classic "addition by subtraction." He was clearly a distraction to the team, and I'm sure there's some sense of relief to KNOW that he's not coming back. Anyway, this team is now much more fun to watch than that travesty I saw against Maryland, prior to the spring game.

Paul -- In the world of lax recruiting, can you specifically seek out ground ball specialists and face-off guys? Because if you can, Starsia really needs to get on that.

  3. Yeah you absolutely can recruit for that. I remember Jack deVillers being recruited out of my high school as a face-off guy. He wasn't terrible, but not as great as we thought he would be either...we haven't had a stud face-off guy in a LONG time.

Chris LaPierre (aren't lacrosse names totally hilarious) is a ground ball specialist. He is a middie and a total beast when it comes to loose-balls, clears, transitions, and doing the dirty work on D. If I remember correctly he was a running back in high school (long island) and he has been great in his two years at UVA. But I didn't see him out there yesterday...not sure what was up. Maybe I just missed him cuz I came into the game late. But yeah, looking at next year, its the midfield and goalie that have to be Dom's concerns.

  4. LaPierre played, and registered two assists on Bocklet goals. Three ground balls. He had an okay game.
