DOA

Welp, that fucking sucked.  Happy fucking birthday to me.

Tony Bennett's Offseason To-Do List:

1) Make Joe Harris shoot free throws.  No reason he should be missing so many.  90% or bust.

2) Develop at least one vocal on-court leader.

3) Fall out of love with Paul Jesperson.

4) Find a way to build an out-of-conference schedule that is tougher than the OOC schedule version of a wet queef.  (A "queef" is a vaginal fart, in case you didn't know.)

5) Petition UVA management to allow Jontel Evans into grad school so he can walk on to the football team and play the sport he should have been playing all along.  I don't know how the eligibility issues get resolved or whatever, but MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

6) Do whatever it takes to get the 2013-14 team (which will be absolutely loaded) ready to win in March.  Only March matters.

7) Do whatever it takes to get the 2013-14 team (which will be absolutely loaded) ready to win in the ACC Tournament.  I'm tired of this shit.

8) 2014 Sweet Sixteen or BUST.  (I'm not sure what "BUST" means, but I'm still saying it.)

Okay, I feel a little better.  Got some f-bombs out, potshots at Jontel and Jespy, used the word queef.  Yep, I feel better.

So now we hang on to our flickering NCAA Tournament dreams by pulling for nothing but chalk in all of the conference tournaments.  If you can bear to watch more basketball today (not sure if I can or not), we specifically need:

  • UTEP over Southern Miss
  • Duke over Maryland
  • Kansas over Iowa State
  • Vanderbilt over Kentucky
  • Michigan State over Iowa
  • New Mexico over San Diego State
  • Mizzou over Ole Miss
  • Anything else that is chalk in the conference tourneys

If I don't go seppuku on myself tonight, I'll give you a Bubble Update in the morning.  For now, I'm pacing around with the katana in my hand, trying to clear my thoughts while seriously considering hara-kiri.

Just noticed my ass...

Oh man, you guys have to check THIS out.

Good lord, man.  There's trying too hard, there's really trying too hard, and then there's this.

Poor Wake

Wake Forest is a basketball school.  The ACC is a basketball conference.  So it's hard to not feel sorry for Wake's small-yet-rabid fanbase.  Hate the stupid tie-dyes as much as you want, but pity the fans of the Demon Deacons for having to endure the disastrous Jeff Bzdelik coaching tenure and Athletic Director Ron Wellman's ultimate hubris in hiring his buddy and then closing out all criticism.

Don't know what I'm talking about?  Learn all about it, HERE and HERE.  And also HERE.

Look, I don't really give a crap about Wake Forest Basketball.  But I do give a crap about the ACC, as a strong ACC is by far the best home for UVA athletics.  So I want to use my voice - however small - to support Wake's uprising in the "Fire Bzdelik" and "Fire Wellman" movements.

Wake is a basketball school, and deserves a competent basketball coach to lead its program back to solid footing.

The ACC is a basketball conference, and needs a healthy and potent Wake Forest team in order to be the best it can be, and to put the best product possible on television [and computer] screens.

Just wanted to remind everyone that the guys from my fantasy football league and I work on a separate blog, one centered around our league and also focused on the larger scope of fantasy football.

I'm not begging for your clicks, just wanted to let you know that if you play fantasy football or follow the NFL in general, you might enjoy the blog.

Up now is a great piece from Paul about the weird dismantling of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.  Go check it out.  And enjoy!

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK!

So...

Because I love Championship Week (and hate trees*), I decided to print off the brackets for all 30 conference tournaments and post them on the wall outside my office.  It's become an office-wide "team builder" to meet up every morning and update the brackets and track the results.  HR UPSIDE YO' HEAD!

Proof:

Special thanks to my friend Jon for the pictures.

*And by the way, here's why I hate trees:

To avoid talking about basketball...

...I'll say this: I'm surprised how many people asked me about NCAA Football (the video game) after I mentioned it in the America 12 post yesterday.

When it comes to that game, here's my m/o: I only play single-player dynasty mode, I only play on Heisman difficulty (not trying to brag, but I like it to be really hard, if possible), and I only coach shitty schools.  Over the course of the last decade, here is the exhaustive list of teams I have elevated to elite status and a national championship.  In no particular order...

Virginia, multiple times (of course)
Baylor (pre Art Briles, when they were super-crappy)
Iowa State
Temple
Purdue
Indiana
Washington State
Vanderbilt
Kansas

Here's where it gets really fun...
Memphis
UAB
SMU
Rice
Tulane
Army
Bowling Green
Akron
Eastern Michigan
San Diego State
Wyoming
Colorado State
UNLV
Hawaii
Middle Tennessee
Louisiana-Monroe
Utah State
Idaho

Currently working on: New Mexico

Some superlatives from the last decade or so of wasting copious hours of my life playing the various annual iterations of this game...

Toughest place to win: Army
Second toughest: Idaho
Top five favorite rags-to-riches schools: Memphis, Tulane, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming

Sweet, sweet Green Wave

Longest non-Virginia coaching tenure: Memphis (~10 seasons)
Wackiest in-game realignmageddon: guiding Idaho into the Pac-10
Second wackiest: Memphis into the SEC
Third wackiest: Army into the Big 10
To-do list: Virginia (always and forever), Navy, Ohio U, Buffalo, UMass, Toledo, Western Michigan, Louisiana-Lafayette, FIU, FAU, South Alabama, San Jose State, UTSA
#1 lesson learned: I hate the Big 10
#2 lesson: develop recruitng pipelines in Florida, Texas, and/or Cali
#3 lesson: recruit running backs and convert them into defensive ends
#4 lesson: once winning gets easy, jump ship to the next challenge, never overstay the challenge
Uniforms I liked at first but then learned to hate: Indiana, Army (with the camo), SMU, Vandy, ULM
Uniforms I was meh about at first but then learned to love: Tulane, UAB, Memphis, Utah State, UNLV

Biggest self-indulgence: Writing this Wahooze post.

January 1, 2013

Happy New Year!

It's now 2013.  I already feel better.

Just watched the ball drop after watching Clemson beat LSU.  Good stuff, ACC.  Here's the bowl game tally for the conference so far, by the way:

Cincinnati 48, Duke 34
Virginia Tech 13, Rutgers 10
Syracuse 38, West Virginia 14
Vanderbilt 38, NC State 24
Georgia Tech 21, USC 7
Clemson 25, LSU 24

I'm cheating to take that big Cuse win over WV, but screw it, the Orange is more ACC than Big East at this point.  Wins over USC and LSU?  Hell yes we'll take that.  Losses to Vandy and Cincy?  Ugly, but not totally shameful.  I'll take 4-2 at this point, hell yes I will.

Here are the remaining games:

Florida State / Northern Illinois
Louisville / Florida
Pitt / Ole Miss
Notre Dame / Alabama

Anyway, have a happy New Year, Wahooze Nation.

Predictions for 2013

Yesterday, I depressed everyone with the Good Riddance, 2012 post.  The point of that post was to illustrate just how crappy this year has been, while at the same time setting the stage for a little bit of optimism for 2013.

ARE YOU READY?

Here we go...

Prediction #1 -- We finally get lucky with the basketball injury bug.  Bub comes back healthy for the UNC game, and the foot problem doesn't flare up again.  Everyone else of importance stays more or less at 100%.

Prediction #2 -- We make a home run hire at defensive coordinator.  Or at least a stand-up triple.  Jon Tenuta fits the bill, in my opinion... but we'll see how things go, probably this week.

Prediction #3 -- The 2013 recruiting class avoids further attrition, and we actually manage to add another darkhorse recruit along the offensive line and at linebacker, where numbers are currently required.

Prediction #4 -- We get - and stay - on the NCAA Tournament bubble during ACC play.  We end up either barely in the tournament or barely out of it.  If we're in, we give our first-round opponent a scare, and if we're out, we advance deep into the NIT.  Hoofans everywhere deem the season a success.

Prediction #5 -- The baseball team does amazing things en route to a national seed for the NCAA Tournament.  We host a regional and dominate, and we go to the Super Regional... my crystal ball is murky about what happens then (it's way to pollyanna to predict a trip to Omaha).

Prediction #6 -- Lacrosse Final Four.  Book it.

Prediction #7 -- Phillip Sims takes the reins and enters the 2013 season as the unquestioned starter.  Praise Jesus.

Prediction #8 -- We go 6-6 or 7-5... or maybe even 8-4, and make it to a bowl game.  Mike London jumps off the hot seat, and Hoofans settle in for an era of sustained success, as defined by some number of consecutive seasons of 7+ wins.  That's magnificently Welshian, I say.

Prediction #9 -- We land Quin Blanding in the 2014 recruiting class.  That sets off a chain reaction of commitments that stack up to form one of best recruiting classes ever, maybe just outside the national top-15.

Prediction #10 -- At least six of the above predictions do not come true.  Sorry, I've grown bitter and cynical in my old age.  If I had to wager real-life money on the three that do come true, I'd say #2, #4, and #8 are the best bets.  #3, #5, and #9 are the next-best bets.

In any case, 2013 figures to be better than 2012, because 2012 straight-up SUCKED.

GO HOOS!

December 29, 2012

Good Riddance, 2012

From a dyed-in-the-wool UVA fan's perspective, 2012 SUCKED ASS.  Let's take a look back at a thoroughly shitty year in Wahoo sports...

December 31 (2011), football: Auburn 43, Virginia 24 -- Okay, so it wasn't 2012, but New Year's Eve is close enough.  The Peach Bowl wasn't a terrible game, but it was terrible special teams and a terrible loss that - when coupled with the season-ending loss to Virginia Tech - cast our breakthrough 2011 season into considerable doubt of validity.

January 2 -- It was announced that KT Harrell and James Jones were leaving the basketball program mid-season.  Losing those two effectively stripped the team of any roster depth it might have enjoyed in 2012.  Later, these defections were cursed and credited for the eventual collapse of a once-promising hardwood campaign.

January 19 -- 7-foot center and hyperactive defensive anchor Assane Sene was injured against Georgia Tech, and never played for Virginia again.  The team's defense just wasn't the same after the loss of shot-blocking big man.

January 22, basketball: Virginia Tech 47, Virginia 45 -- WHY THE FUCK did we lose this game???  (And really, three question marks are not enough.)

February 11, basketball: North Carolina 70, Virginia 58 -- The loss sucked, but what was worse was Joe Harris' broken hand, an injury suffered in this game.  Joe playing at less than 100% down the stretch doomed our season.

February 14, basketball: Clemson 60, Virginia 48 -- Terrible loss.  Never should have happened.

February 18 -- Promising freshman Malcolm Brogdon injured his foot against Maryland.  Another big hit to the depth of the basketball team, and this injury ended up being severe enough to trigger a redshirt season for Brog (probably our starting 2 if he were healthy) for the 2012-13 season.  Fairly disastrous.

February 25, basketball: North Carolina 54, Virginia 51 -- This is the kind of loss that really kills you as a UVA fan.  We had UNC on the ropes and we had a resumé-making win in our sights (a win that would have improved our tournament seeding, allowing us to avoid facing Florida in the first round).  Of course, the Carolina Mafia stole this one away from us, in the form of crooked ACC refs.

March 1, basketball: Florida State 63, Virginia 60 -- Remember when Ian Miller hit that miracle three-pointer with time expiring to complete their comeback?  We led by 11 with 4:30 left to play, and then ended up losing the game.  I kicked my ottoman when Miller buried that three, and I'm pretty sure I broke a bone in the top of my foot.  I've been walking with a limp ever since.

March 9, basketball: NC State 67, Virginia 64 -- We rolled into the ACC Tournament looking to prove our ability and resolve... but NC State had other ideas.  Many fans thought we had a chance at a deep run in Atlanta.  Noooooooope.

March 16, basketball: Florida 71, Virginia 45 -- UVA's triumphant return to the NCAA Tournament was the opposite of triumphant.  Unless by "triumphant" you mean totally embarrassing and depressing.

April 13, lacrosse: Duke 13, Virginia 5 -- Another year, another blowout loss to Duke in LAX.  (We really need to a find a way off of this schneid against the Blow Devils.)  Anyway, this 2012 loss to Duke threw our whole season on its ear.

May 2 -- Phillip Sims transferred from Alabama to Virginia.  Seemed like good news at the time, but looking back over a messy QB carousel and a botched 2012 campaign, this transfer looks somewhat like a curse disguised as a blessing.

May 20, lacrosse: Notre Dame 12, Virginia 10 -- An early end to UVA's lacrosse campaign, with this loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  We rightfully expect better from our elite-level program.

June 3, baseball: Appalachian State 6, Virginia 5 / Oklahoma 5, Virginia 4 -- Over the course of a dubious doubleheader, UVA's season ended with a pair of one-run losses.   This was a failure to live up to our #1 seed status and was us falling well short of matching 2011's run to the College World Series.  (Still, the 39-19-1 season was pretty darn good for a rebuilding year, so you won't hear me bitching too much about the baseball team's performance in 2012.)

September 15, football: Georgia Tech 56, Virginia 20 -- This ugly blowout loss to a mediocre GT team really exposed our defense as not being all that great, and [in my opinion] fast-tracked the firing of Jim Reid.

September 29, football: Louisiana Tech 44, Virginia 38 -- In hindsight, we had to have this win in order to be a good team in 2012.  Obviously, it didn't happen.  The late-game snafu of sending our punt return team out on the field when the Bulldogs sent out their offense serves as a glowing testament to the coaching staff's shortcomings.  That was an inexcusable mistake.

October 1 -- Starting free safety point guard Jontel Evans broke his foot in practice.  It's never good when a starter goes down, and especially not at a run-heavy position like fullback point guard.  Naturally, this being Virginia and us being the target of so much terrible cosmic karma, Bub has struggled to return to action.

October 6, football: Duke 42, Virginia 17 -- Losing to Duke is always unacceptable.  Being blown out by Duke?  Cause for furious anger and terrible consternation.  Like, identity crisis type shit.  ("Are WE the new Duke?"  It's frightening to consider, but as we watch them play Cincy in the Tire Belk Bowl while we sit at home with our collective thumbs up our collective asses, it does feel like a bit of a role reversal.  Ugh.)

October 8 -- The roof to our new Indoor Practice Facility burst into flames.  Hokies everywhere burst into laughter.

October 13, football: Maryland 27, Virginia 20 -- Another loss to a bitter rival, another loss coming as a direct result of dismal special teams play.  Cue humiliation.  Screw you, Maryland. Eat shit and die, Stefon Diggs.

October 20, football: Wake Forest 16, Virginia 10 -- The punt doinking off of Khalek Shepherd's facemask is the play of the year for Virginia Football; it's the perfect symbol of the season that was.

November 9, basketball: George Mason 63, Virginia 59 -- What a way to open the new season.

November 13, basketball: Delaware 59, Virginia 53 -- This loss to a fairly bad Delaware team is going to be an NCAA Tournament resumé-killer, and it cost us a trip to Madison Square Garden for the NIT semis, where we would have faced some PRI-boosting competition.

November 15, football: North Carolina 37, Virginia 13 -- Another loss to a bitter rival, this time a proper woodshedding on national television.  Fantastic.  Just fantastic.

November 19 -- Maryland announced its intention to depart the ACC for the BigTen, and immediately placed the ACC back in shaky "house of cards" status.  Screw you, Maryland.

November 24, football: Virginia Tech 17, Virginia 14 -- Horrendous decisions by Mike London cost us this game against a truly awful Tech team.  Congrats to us as we successfully pissed away our best chance in a decade to beat those scumbags.

December 2 -- Mike London announced the dismissal of Jim Reid, thoroughly confusing and infuriating UVA fans everywhere.  Meanwhile Bill Lazor continues coaching at Virginia, unscathed by the offensive retardation we suffered from in 2012.

December 22, basketball: Old Dominion 63, Virginia 61 -- If losing to Delaware was a resumé-killer, then losing to a 1-10 ODU team was a resumé atomic bomb.  It was resumé genocide.  Now we have to try to survive in a post resumé-apocalyptic landscape, fighting bandits for dirty pisswater and trying to procreate with our sisters in order to keep the human race alive.

What a shitty, shitty year this has been.  Suck it, 2012.  Good riddance.

In Defense of the [35!] Bowl Games

[rant]

Tonight, we will be treated to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, pitting the 7-5 Brigham Young University Cougars (best win: 6-3 over Utah State) against the homestanding 9-3 San Diego State University Aztecs (best win: 21-19 over a not-as-good-as-they-usually-are Boise State team).

The Poinsettia Bowl is one of 35 bowl games being played this holiday season, joining such instant classics as the BBVA Compass Bowl, featuring 6-6 Ole Miss and 6-6 Pitt, the Little Caesar's ("pizza, pizza") Bowl, spotlighting 7-5 Western Kentucky vs. 6-6 Central Michigan, and something called the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, starring 7-5 Arizona State vs. 7-5 Navy.

So now you're joining legions of babbling heads in asking, what's the point?

Here's the point, jackass:

MORE FOOTBALL.

It's actually pretty simple, right?

All summer long, we college football addicts sit around trying - and failing - to convince ourselves that we actually enjoy the marathon snoozefest that is the MLB regular season, all while secretly craving for football of any sort, type or varietal.  And now we're supposed to just reject that football, just because it's at the end of the [agonizingly short] regular season, and because the bowl names are stupid, and because the blah-blah media folks tell us that these bowl games are asinine?

I say screw that.  Bowl games are awesome.  I'd be okay if there were more.  Hell, I'd like it if there were more.  Open it up to teams that went 5-7, I don't care.  I want more teams playing in crazily-named games in nutty locations in oddball stadiums.  I want more college football.  I'll always want more college football.  To not want more college football is what's asinine.

I'd trade a pound of flesh to see UVA scratch out those shoulda-been-wins over Wake and Maryland to go 6-6 and have the chance to play 6-6 Jamaican Institute of Zebra Zoology in the  ShamWow Community Cockle Bowl this weekend.  Hell yeah I would.  You wouldn't?

So I say shine on you crazy diamonds.  You Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, shine on.  You GoDaddy.com Bowl, shine the heck on.  Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl, SHINE ON!

I guess I'm just not sophisticated enough to understand why MORE FOOTBALL is a bad thing.  I sure do wish Virginia were still playing, and I bet I'm not alone.

Candor (a coaching change post)

can·dor

/ˈkandər/
Noun
The quality of being open and honest in expression; frankness.
Synonyms
candour - frankness - sincerity - candidness - openness

This is mostly a coaching change post.  But only mostly.  Okay, here we go...

Upon further and deeper reflection, I think Mike London really screwed the pooch in the Virginia Tech game.  He's screwed the pooch in a lot of his decisions as our head coach, actually.  The never-ending QB carousel.  Going for it on 4th down when he should be kicking/punting.  Icing the kicker.  Et cetera.  The fact that he blew the Tech game this season has given me a level of irritation that I have yet to recover from.  He hasn't shown us much - at all - in the way of coaching chops when it comes to gameday.  That's a concern.

We're also confused, coach.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another concern is the fact that we waited a week after the season before firing two coaches (Jim Reid and Jeff Hanson) whose units WERE NOT the reason for the 4-8 record.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That said, I'm okay with the dismissals.  Here's why:  Reid had two total seasons of coaching experience at the D-1A / FBS level prior to his stint as Virginia's DC -- he was the defensive coordinator at Boston College in 1994 and was the defensive line coach at Syracuse in 2004.  Hanson spent two seasons in some sort of undefined role at Marshall in 1980 and 1981.  And that's it.  These guys are older, but they were still just cutting their teeth at this level.

An experienced newbie.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's another reason I'm okay with the dismissals, as illustrated by some national rankings...
  • 98th (out of 124) in sacks with 17.
  • 117th in INTs with just 4.
  • 69th in points allowed with 29.8 ppg.
  • 76th in opponent red zone scoring % with 83.33%.
  • 112th in takeaways per game with just 1.1.
The opponent yards per game (32nd, 361.3 ypg) and 3rd down % (13th, 31.71%) were very good, but this defense only ever did enough to maybe keep us in games. It didn't help out the struggling offense with game-changing plays.  I want more blitzing, more takeaways, more game-changing plays.  Reid ran a solid system, but it was very vanilla.  I want some spice!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The UVA fans who are all boo-hooey about these dismissals don't know what's good for the program moving forward.  Mike London is facing a do-or-die 2013 season, and it would have taken too long to install a new offense under a new offensive coordinator.  The status quo delivered an abysmal 4-8 season, so something had to change.  Goodbye Jim Reid.  You're a great dude, but something had to change.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jon Tenuta seems to be the current leader in the clubhouse for the DC hire.  Some UVA fans are not enthused about that, but I am.  Tenuta is a UVA guy who runs a hyper-aggressive, blitz heavy 4-3 defense.  Pressure is a philosophy when it comes to Tenuta, and he will build a defense that features the blitz.  I like that for a few reasons:
1) It's more fun to watch.  Period.  Point blank.  It's just a more entertaining brand of football, and that has to count for something... especially for a program that just saw a 3% drop in attendance and is suffering through all-time lows in fan interest.  We need some excitement on the field.
2) Attacking defenses can be better with less talent.  Playing it close to the vest only works when you can seriously out-talent the opponent.  We cannot, nor will we likely ever be able to.  So with a blitz-heavy D, we can sort of "hide" some talent deficiencies in certain places.  As long as we have guys who can generate pressure, we'll be okay.
3) Al Groh's and Jim Reid's bend-don't-break schemes were good enough to hold us in games, but never won games on their own.  With a pressure system, we'll have the roof blown off our D more often, but we'll also generate more turnovers and set up the offense with better field position.  An effective attacking defense can raise the level of the entire team.  (See also: the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.)
I want an attacking defense.  Jon Tenuta would deliver that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If Tenuta's the pick, what in the hell is the hold up?  I know he's trying to be helpful by sticking around at NC State to coach them through the bowl game... but I don't give a shit about NC State or their bowl game.  Honestly, that's an annoying, flimsy reason not to get him in here and coaching this team.  We need him out on the recruiting trail, mending the relationships damaged by Reid's dismissal.  The fact that Tenuta is not already here leads me to believe that his name might be a mere smokescreen, kinda like Tubby Smith's name was when we hired Tony Bennett.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So if Tenuta is a smoke screen, who are the real candidates?  I have zero insider knowledge, but these are my guesses:
-- Frank Spaziani, just fired as Boston College's head coach
-- Tyrone Nix, Middle Tennessee
-- Dave Aranda, Utah State
-- Chuck Heater, Temple
But as Mike mentioned in his Murderball post, the big fish is Randy Shannon.  Great DC (defenses ranked 6th, 7th, 2nd, 28th, 4th, and 7th nationally while at the U), good relationship with London, failed as Miami's head coach, but would open major doors for Virginia to recruit Florida... and is sitting there as TCU's linebackers coach, ready to be whisked away to a better position.  I have a hunch he's the guy we're busy pursuing right now.
So maybe Tenuta isn't a smokescreen as much as he's a safety net.  I guess time will tell...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Meanwhile, news broke last night that we hired a new special teams coordinator, UTEP's Jeff Banks.  By all accounts, he was London and the administration's top choice for the post.  So I'm happy.  Mostly, I'm happy that we're bringing in a specialist, not just tacking the ST duties onto an existing position coach's duties.  For the first time I can remember, UVA has specifically brought in a guy to run the special teams unit.  This alone should turn our biggest weakness into a strength, and in short order.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One last thing, and I'm switching gears to REALIGNMAGEDDON.  If you know me at all or have read this blog for any amount of time, you know I'm a huge conference realignment geek.  Well, about a week ago I stumbled upon an article that I found to be a major game-changer in terms of the way I think about realignment.  Please read this excellent piece:
If you buy that (and I definitely do), then you can look at the ACC as it stands now and see that weathering the current storm and remaining intact is the way to go.
At the end of the day, the quality of a product is the only characteristic that will lead to consistent and stable sales.
The ACC has a quality product, especially when you factor in basketball, baseball, and the Olympic sports.  We made a great addition in Louisville.  Let's hang tough, see our football powerhouse programs get back to being powerhouses, watch the TV bubble burst, and then usher in another 60+ years of ACC stability.  This is where UVA belongs, and the ACC will survive.
November 2, 2012
One-Liners, Et al.
I haven't posted anything in a while, since I've been busy wrapping my mind around this 6-game losing streak in football, enjoying the bye week for the Hoos (and Bengals), surviving a hurricane, and trying to get my mind right for basketball.
A while ago, I declared that Wahooze would become like the blog version of tapas.  That didn't really take root, as I have grown increasingly bloated and long-winded.  However, the will to carpet bomb you with quick-hitting succinct thoughts on UVA sports is still strong.  So call it a tapas failure, but maybe I can give you a pu-pu platter.
Anyway, here's a bunch of one-liners (or something like one-liners) of things that have sort of been on my mind during the eight days I haven't posted.  I hope you enjoy.  (If not, go back and read Examining Bennettball.  That was a good piece, broken picture links be damned.)  Anyway, on to the one-liners...
  • Chip Kelly to the NFL?  I think his Blur Offense would translate, and I think pro football will be forever changed.  But what team is ripe for a coaching hire like Kelly?  The Kansas City Chiefs.
  • Speaking of the Blur... You gotta read this piece "Speed Chess," from Grantland's Chuck Klosterman.
  • Back to the reason you visit this blog, UVA sports.  I made the following comment to my friend Karl today while discussing Virginia Basketball.  I was proud of it, so I am repeating it here: Tony Bennett excels at turning five fingers into a fist.
  • This is the first season that Mike London has experienced hardship as a head coach.  Think about it.  First year at Richmond, BOOM, national championship.  Second year at Richmond, 11-2 and a trip to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.  Smooth sailing.  First year at Virginia, 4-8 in a certain "crawl out of the crater" situation, with a marquee win over Miami.  Second year at Virginia, BOOM, Peach Bowl.  Now here we are, his fifth season as a head coach, sitting at 2-6 and coming off a bye in desperate need of some direction from the head coach.  If we finish up at 2-10 or 3-9, London will have to make his first really difficult decisions as a head coach.
  • It doesn't get much mention, but losing Billy Schautz for such an extended period of time this season has really killed us.
  • I'll continue to sing it from the rafters: Akil "Big Fun" Mitchell will be the breakout star of our 2012-13 basketball campaign.
  • I'm worried about attendance for our nationally-televised Thursday night game against UNC.  Dolphins @ Bills aren't going to draw many eyes away from ESPN to the NFL Network that night.  We really don't need the nation to see us get drubbed by the Tarheels in a half-full stadium that night.  That's the kind of thing that can really harm a program that is trying to pull itself up by the bootstraps.
  • I love that Jeffrey beat both Pierce and Mike in Weekly Wahooze Pix last week.  LOVE it.
  • I won't even bother trying to hide it anymore.  I want the spread offense at UVA.  I want it, and I want it bad.
  • Learn the name Joe McCarthy.  I have a feeling he's going to be a big, big star for Virginia Baseball, and it starts in his freshman season in 2013.
  • Too bad Virginia Tech's worst season in a decade happens at the same time as our worst season since the '70s.  We really need to clip those turkeys soon, but I'm not confident it's going to happen.
  • What's going to happen to Derek Dooley once Tennessee fires him?  I have no idea, but I know he's not going to land at UVA... yet.
  • The rumor that Al Golden might cut bait at Miami and head to Boston College makes a lot of sense on a lot of levels.
  • Would Iowa really fire Kirk Ferentz?  I don't buy it.
  • Next Friday (Nov. 9th) is the start of college basketball season.  I cannot freaking wait.
  • I miss the NHL.  But only a little bit.
  • I've got a feeling NC State is not going to be as good as everyone thinks they're going to be.  Mark Gottfried is kind of a shithead.
  • The Houston Texans are going to win the Super Bowl.
  • I'm really excited about Justin Anderson.  I can't wait to see him on the floor for the Hoos this winter.
  • Still holding out hope that NBA basketball is making its way to Virginia Beach, and that for the first time in my life the state of Virginia will have a professional sports franchise to call its own.
  • It's late, I'm tired, go Hoos.
Two other blogs you should be reading...
This is just a humble mom & pop operation here at Wahooze.  We post for our own self-centered enjoyment only.  To get the comprehensive look at UVA sports through the eyes of invested and knowledgeable fans, you'll need to complement Wahooze with two other fantastic blogs.
I highly encourage you to check these out, subscribe, visit often, and essentially give them your clicks:
Streaking The Lawn
UVa sports uncovered... from the Rotunda to Homer and back
from old virginia
I am a Virginia fan and this is my Blawgg. I began life as a diehard Michigan fan, and orange joined the maize and blue in my blood when, as a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed first year, I saw my first UVA football game on a hot September afternoon. Here you will find impassioned and monumentally biased coverage of 'Hoos football in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball and lacrosse in the spring, and everything else when the mood strikes me.
Seriously, slide some clicks their way, folks.  Both are great reads.
Shameless Plug
A little less than a year ago, my friend Nathan and I talked about working together to start a blog -- a fantasy football news, opinions, and advice blog.
We never really found the time to get it off the ground beyond the initial set-up, and Add/Drop/Trade/Kill/Destroy* just kind of sat there, dying a slow death.
Until last week, when I had an idea: make A/D/T/K/D* the official unofficial blog of the Cavalier Keeper League -- my super-involved decade-old fantasy football league. The concept: Use the blog to house all of our weekly recurring articles, the stuff we would usually post on the CKL message board to enjoy for a season and then lose forever. Stuff like the Wednesday FAABnalysis, the Weekly Preview, etc. Not the smack talk or the roiling conversational machinations of rules change threads, but the big set pieces that could potentially have an audience beyond just the 14 of us in the fantasy football league.
Additionally, we - all 14 of us - will use this blog for what it was originally intended: Opinion columns on fantasy football. Profane, perverse... just relaxed, informal, fun writing about fantasy football.
Along with that, we will expand our realm of CKL set pieces. Maybe we'll have a post-draft Q&A with each coach -- Why did you make that pick? Which pick was your favorite? Which player you had targeted sadly slipped away? Et cetera.  These posts will unearth information specific to our league, but applicable to other leagues.
Many people know we have the best fantasy football league on the planet. And I think there's an audience for those people to take a look at what we're doing and maybe use some of that wisdom to build their own leagues or run their own teams.
Anyway, long story short, I'm the architect of a second blog, one about fantasy football.  Click on the above link to check it out.  Who knows?  Maybe you'll enjoy it.
